Wix & Squarespace vs Bespoke: Why Most DIY Cornwall Websites Stay Invisible
10 October 2026 · Lee Searle, Penzance
DIY website builders look tempting, but many Cornish businesses end up with a site nobody finds. Here is an honest comparison of DIY versus professional, and when each makes sense.
Plenty of Cornish business owners have spent a few long winter evenings building their own website. It looks fine on the laptop, the logo is there, the phone number is there. Then months go by and the enquiries never come.
That is not because DIY builders are bad. It is because looking good and being found are two different jobs.
Where DIY website builders do well
- They are quick to start, and you can tweak things yourself
- Monthly costs look low on the pricing page
- They are fine for a hobby, a one-off event or testing an idea
If you only need an online business card that you hand out in person, a DIY site can be enough.
Where they usually fall short for local businesses
1. Speed on Cornish mobile signal
Most of your customers find you on a phone, often on patchy 4G in a lane outside St Just or a car park in Bude. Template builders load a lot of extra code you never use. Every extra second is a customer who taps back and rings the next business on the list. We covered this in more depth in Why Speed Matters More Than Bells and Whistles.
2. Local search basics left unfinished
Being found for "plumber Truro" or "cafe St Ives" depends on things DIY builders leave to you: proper page titles, your town and service named clearly, business details Google can read, and one page per service. Most DIY sites have a single generic homepage that says "Welcome to our website".
3. Built to look nice, not to get calls
A good local website is designed around one action: getting the customer to call, message or ask for a quote. That means a tap-to-call button that is always visible, clear prices or "from" prices, photos of real work and reviews near the top.
4. The hidden cost is your time
The subscription is the cheap bit. The real cost is the weekends spent fiddling, the plug-ins, the domain and email headaches, and the work you did not get because nobody found you.
When going professional makes sense
- You rely on customers searching Google or Google Maps
- You serve a specific area, such as Penwith, Truro or North Cornwall
- You would rather be doing your actual job than editing a website
