How to Rank in the Cornwall Google Maps 3-Pack (Without Paying for Ads)
10 October 2026 · Lee Searle, Penzance
The three businesses shown on the map get most of the local calls. A step-by-step guide for Cornish businesses to improve their Google Maps ranking for free.
When someone searches "electrician Falmouth" or "cafe near me", Google usually shows a map with three businesses underneath. That little box, often called the 3-pack, gets a big share of local calls. Here is how to give yourself the best chance of being in it, without spending anything on ads.
If you are not showing on Maps at all, start with our earlier guide: Why Your Cornish Business Isn't Showing on Google Maps.
Step 1: Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile
- Pick the most accurate main category, for example "Plumber" rather than "Contractor"
- Add a few secondary categories only if they genuinely apply
- Fill in opening hours, services, a short description and your phone number
- Set your service area to the towns you really cover
Step 2: Keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere
Google checks your details across your website, your profile and directories like Yell, Facebook and Checkatrade. If one says "Unit 3" and another says "3 Trevithick Road", or an old phone number is still out there, it weakens trust. Make them match exactly.
Step 3: Get reviews steadily, not all at once
Lots of reviews matter, but so does getting them regularly. Ask every happy customer, ideally the same day, with a direct link to your review box. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and briefly.
Step 4: Add photos regularly
Upload real photos of your work, premises, team and vans. Fresh photos show Google the business is active and help customers choose you.
Step 5: Link your profile to a proper website
Your Google profile and your website support each other. A website that names your towns and services clearly, loads fast and has your details matching your profile gives Google confidence to show you. See how we approach this for Penzance, St Ives, Truro, Newquay and Bude.
Step 6: Post updates
Google lets you post offers, news and recent jobs on your profile. A short post every week or two keeps your listing active.
What you cannot control
Distance matters. Someone searching in Newquay will usually see Newquay businesses first. That is why naming the areas you cover, and having pages for them, matters so much. We explain how this varies around the county in From Penwith to Bude.
